Pretty much any garage door installation or garage door services company worth its salt will offer full assessment, delivery, removal and installation services to its customers. It stands to reason- after all, garage doors are massive pieces of equipment, heavy and pretty complex. Almost everyone investing in a new garage door will allow the company to do the installation.

But if you're confident in your own construction and physics abilities, you can save some money by doing the installation yourself. Sectional garage doors in particular require quite a bit of effort- a simple lift-up door is slightly easier.

In general, you should never try to fix, adjust, or remove your standard torsion spring garage door by yourself. The amount of tension contained within these springs can be dangerous for a single person. Call in the professionals.

But some models lend themselves to adjustment by the lay person. If you're not sure which variety you have, you probably don't know enough to be messing about with them anyway. And if you can't make heads or tails of the instructions that the manufacturer provides, again, you likely shouldn't be making the attempt. Garage doors can be quite dangerous- more so than any other appliance in your home.

A new top of the line model of garage door opener mechanism has recently hit the market. It is not widely available to general consumers yet, but it has a number of positive aspects as well as drawbacks that should make anyone in the market take pause and take note.

One of the main new improvements on the model from older version is the fact that is has a highly accurate, high-functioning self-diagnostic system designed to alert the user to any potential malfunctions or issues. It can even help install itself.

Of course, it uses infrared beams to detect objects in the path of the descending garage door and halt its progress if there is an obstruction. But that is now a basic safety feature of almost any new garage door opener. The newer model improves on the

It's also awesome because it comes with two transmitters and an insanely threatening security system that connect to your home system or actively prevent intruders from gaining access to your home. The door also automatically turns on a light when opened, and the lights are on a timer to close off again once you have left the vicinity.

All in all the new model has a ton of neat new features. The only drawback that it seems to have is the price- it's rather more expensive than older models. But it's totally worth it.

Mechanics of the Garage Door and its Opener

The most intricate and fussy part of any garage door is the garage door opener and its associated nuts, bolts, and hardware. You have to deal with the drive mechanism, the long tracks, the tightly-wound and dangerous springs, the brackets, and more. These all combine to make the garage door open nice and smooth time and time again, no matter how much you use it.

And then you must remember, not all garage door opener parts are created equal- in fact, each brand name and each model has different sizes, shapes, and parts, and some even use completely different mechanisms to operate.

In fact, there are three main category of garage door opener, including chain drive (the most basic, and noisiest), screw drive (slightly quieter but still fairly loud), and rubber belt-drive (the quietest.) These all use similar physics but different specifics to wrench open your door every day.

Recently, many families have gotten rid of their old, wooden garage doors with roll-up sections in favor of new, insulated metal garage doors. The newer, slicker doors look great and operate much better than many older models. Even a newer door that isn't at the top-of-the-line will operate better than the best of the older doors.

For those who also decide to replace their garage door openers, they'll be pleasantly surprised by in the increased reliability and efficiency of newer models.

New metal, insulated doors also increase efficiency of heat retention in the home. You may not think much about the numbers, but the combination in garage door opening time and garage insulation can save you a lot of money. You'll certainly have to pay less on your electricity bills, and you may save hours of total time waiting for your door to open, when you tally it up over an extended period.

A lot of things work that way- small changes added up over a long period of time can have a huge impact on your life. Even thirty minutes less watching TV every day can give you more than a full week of extra time a year. Or a hundred calories less per day adds up to ten pounds lost a year.

In that spirit, why not go for small changes that have a big impact by investing in a new garage door system.

Garage Door Opener Frequencies, Part 2

An incident in Virginia occurred in December that brought the issue of military-controlled garage door opener frequencies to a head. An entire town near the Marine facility in Quantico had to buy all-new garage door openers because of the military's use of the frequencies. They were not offered reimbursement for the expenses.

A spokesperson for the Marine base made no apologies, stating that such consumer devices with wireless transmission capabilities are all unlicensed users of what essentially belongs to the government. They have to accept the preemptive usage of the spectrum by the licensed users, aka, the Department of Defense.

While disruption of garage door functions can be problematic enough, one must wonder if this blanket statement about "consumer devices" would apply to something like cell phones in the future. If cell phone connectivity were suddenly compromised due to usurping by the military, it could lead to a very dangerous situation, both practically and politically.

We can only hope that the higher ups at the Department of Defense are wise enough to never allow that to happen. The immediate danger and the doubtless angry backlash could be very dangerous.

Unfortunately, no member of the garage door installation industry can make a move to help the situation, as there is currently no process by which a civilian may obtain licensing for use of the frequency spectrum.
