There is a new movement in this country towards saving and conserving resources and using energy efficient products. We all know our beautiful planet is in peril, threatened by polluting modern technology and the taxes on resources our huge population demands.
We can all do a small part to help mitigate the effects of global warming, pollution, and the greenhouse effect. Some of them we have already done- switching away from chloral floral carbons in products, reducing CO2 emissions, and trying to cut down on water waste.
Hopefully, as a good citizen, you already do your best to switch off lights, use energy efficient bulbs, reduce gas usage, and turn down your thermostat. But there is now another way in which you can save on your energy bill and help the environment at the same time: energy efficient garage doors.
Garage doors can help save huge amounts on what you must pay for heating in the winter and cooling in the summer- if you insulate them. But using foamed-in-place polyurethane insulation, you can greatly decrease the temperature leakage that is common in wood, steel, and fiberglass composite garage doors.
On your next garage door installation or garage door repair, as about polyurethane insulation- you won't regret it.

For centuries, the only material used for building (and also building garage doors) in this country was plain old wood. Not because wood possessed any great qualities as an insulator or a weather-proof material, but just because that was the only thing available. Construction and builders did what they could with what they had, growing and changing from the original barn-door double-door style carriage house design to the more modern folding, retracting door that we are all familiar with in this day and age.
The company first credited with creating the kind of garage door modern Americans are familiar with is Overhead Door Corporation. Other companies known to have made significant contributions to the business include Wayne-Dalton, Clopay Building Products, Stanley, and others. These early starters are not the only companies in the game, and some of the older, more staid companies are being outstripped by younger, more adaptable companies.
Some companies that originally made garage door parts branched out and became exclusively garage door opener companies. These groups have made leaps and bounds in progress towards higher-technology door openers and features. Liftmaster and Craftsman, for example, have figured out many cool new features, including safety precautions, automatic lights, battery back-ups, and quieter motors.

In the old days, garage door openers used to be pretty simple mechanisms designed to help people open the largest, heaviest door in the their home so they wouldn't have to leave the comfort of their vehicle. But nowadays, there are plenty of reasons to consider updating to a more.. modern model.
Safety: Since the early nineties, garage door opener companies have been making products that follow a gold standard of safety- the new requirement makes sure that every machine has a reversing mechanism that detects object in the path of the door and makes it reverse if there is anything in the way. Basically, two sensors (about two feet off the floor) use infrared to detect obstructions and send a message to the openeing mechanism.
Noise: Newer models of openers are much more effective in reducing the awful noise garage door openers are famous for. Especially if you spring for a belt-drive opener, you can really cut down on the decibels you have to endure every day.
Security: Older models are subjected to what are called "code grabbers" because they have universal codes that can be easily cracked. New openers have rotating codes that update and change rapidly, making it next to impossible for someone to use a code grabber to get access to your door. Also, many new openers come with additional safety features.
There are many reasons to upgrade to a newer garage door opener, it's very much worth the investment.

The earliest versions of garage door opener controls were much simpler than today's machines- they consisted of a transmitter, also known as the remote, and the receiver, which was in charge of telling the opener mechanism to begin operating. The transmitter was supposed to only propagate a signal on a certain frequency, and the receiver would get it much like a radio signal.
The main idea for this function is rooted in technology developed during World War II. Originally, this radio transmitter/receiver/function system was utilized to detonate remote-controlled bombs. Luckily, in your home, the receiver is only signaling to a garage door, not a bunch of C-4 o dynamite.
The problem was, there weren't enough unique frequencies to make sure that remotes wouldn't be able to open garage doors that they didn't belong to. Lots of transmitters would interfere with receivers throughout the area.
The next wave of wireless openers also had something of an interfering frequency problem, which was rectified by making the garage door opener owner choose and set a code by way of dip switches on both pieces of equipment. This only provided 256 different codes and therefore was not very high security.
The third group of garage door opener technologies consisted of a larger frequency range that went froun three hundred to four hundred mega-hertz, with reliance on rolling code technology that changed a transmitter's code hourly.
And the latest versions are highly similar to this, but with a more specific frequency range that avoids any interference from the radio system (LMRS) that the U.S. Military uses.

When you hire a garage door installation worker or garage door repair person, you expect a certain quality of service from them, to reassure you that you will be satisfied with the end product, that you will get the price you want, and that you will be pleased with the customer service you receive.
Service people know (or aught to know) that many studies show that it costs more to get a new customer than to hold on to an old customer, and that bad experience leads to attrition of customers.
If a client is upset with an occurrence during the course of a garage door repair, a professional does not get emotional back, but keeps things in the realm of facts and figures. If a customer is angry, it is completely unprofessional to get angry back, and is legitimate grounds for complaint. If a professional is in a service-oriented field, they are trained to deal with these types of situations.
Half of the battle is establishing communication and understanding between all parties involved- if a problem is being related, the other person should repeat it back with different wording to be sure everyone is understanding one another. Then the main questions should be: "what can we do to resolve the situation?" "what could we have don't to prevent this?" and "I accept responsibility." (Okay the last one's not a question but it's important!)
Be sure to establish hand reiterate the agreed upon solution to make sure everyone's satisfied and the garage door comes out to everyone's delight.
In this way, service can be a breeze instead of a hassle.
