Got a great garage door but no garage to put it in? I’m only
mostly kidding.
But building a garage is actually not an impossible feat,
even for a non-construction worker.
First you need to make footings and foundations. (though this needs to
be approves through building uthorities), and then exacavate according to slope
and drainage.
Your footings and foundation shuld be made of smooth
concrete, 8’’ by 16’’. You can add ‘re-bar’ metal rodsto the foundation for
extra strength. Then you four gravel and slab into the floow space, evening it
out. Evening out concrete is a
long, drawn-out process, but basically it involves running a lot of smooth
edges over the surface of the half-liquid, half-solid to make it smooth.
Next you need
to frame the opening where your garage door will reside, including the correct
trimmer and header boards, usually about 8 by 9 feet.
Building out the walls of any structure is actually the
least difficult part- it’s the roof that’s really rough! Make sure you space
out your lovely shingles such that you have a perfect seal.
And of course, the best part- the garage door itself. Chances
are, though, if you built the garage, installing the door (especially a paneled
one) should be a cakewalk!
