Garage Door Purpose

What is the
purpose of a garage door?  Well, usually
there is more than one purpose, but for this article, the primary purpose is to
protect someone’s car or cars.  Even
folks who are not NBA superstars like Dwyane Wade or LeBron James like to make
sure that their ride (or rides) is protected.
While your average NBA superstar probably has multiple garage doors on
his garage, most folks just have a single garage door, even if they may have a
two-car garage.

People with older
garages may not actually use it to protect their cars any longer since the
older garage may not even have an automatic garage door opener.  In these cases, after the blush of having a
new car wears off, the laziness sets in meaning it is easier to park the car
outdoors rather than have to stop the car, put it in park (or neutral for a
standard transmission), set the emergency brake, get out, open the garage door,
get back in the car, release the brake, put the car back in gear and ease it
forward into the garage, stop the car again, put it back in park (or whichever
gear – usually first or reverse if it’s a standard), kill the engine, get out,
gather anything that’s to be taken into the house, and close the garage
door.  This becomes especially annoying
if there is inclement weather such as rain or snow.  When there is inclement weather it is far
easier to park the car in the driveway, outside of the garage, gather up all
the things to take inside, open the door, step out into the weather and do a
mad dash into the house.  Easier and much
less chance of getting soaked in the rain or snow.

So if the garage
and garage door are not being used to protect the car, what is the
purpose?  Many individuals keep older
furniture, boxes of books, record albums, eight track tapes, out of style
clothing, or tools stored in the garage.
It doesn’t matter if the garage is directly connected to the home or a
separate, stand alone building.  To be
realistic, this happens even if the owner does have an automatic garage door
opener.  The garage becomes an easy
storage location and once it is used for storage, the space for the car gets
smaller and smaller.

Then the owner
decides it’s time to have a garage sale.
Once again, the automatic garage door opener becomes very convenient
during the sale as it allows the owner to slip away for a few minutes and
quickly open and shut the door.

Convenience is always
nice, isn’t it?
